WordPress.com’s New AI Assistant Just Made Building Websites Shockingly Easy

WordPress.com launched an integrated AI assistant on February 17, 2026, offering automated site design, content creation, and image generation directly within its editor. The feature, initially available to users on Business and Commerce paid plans, enables natural language commands for website modifications and leverages AI models from providers including Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic.

The rollout marks a significant shift for the platform’s 445 million websites, though access remains limited. Users must opt in through their site settings, except those who build sites using WordPress’s AI website builder, who get the assistant enabled automatically, according to the WordPress.com Blog announcement. The feature requires modern block themes to function and notably excludes self-hosted WordPress.org installations.

The assistant operates through a conversational sidebar where users type commands like “add a contact page” or “change my site’s colors to be brighter and bolder,” WordPress.com said in its announcement. Within the Media Library, a new “Generate Image” button leverages Google’s Nano Banana AI models to create custom images with specified styles and aspect ratios, TechCrunch reported.

Content editing capabilities extend beyond simple text generation. Users can invoke the assistant by typing @ai in block notes, enabling it to rewrite biographies, translate content, or provide contextual information with external links. The system can access the site’s existing content for context while making modifications.

Technology and Privacy Considerations

WordPress.com built the assistant on a PHP AI Client supporting multiple providers, allowing different features to tap different services. Image generation uses Google’s infrastructure, while text features may utilize OpenAI or Anthropic models, with data processing occurring on both Automattic’s servers and those of the AI providers.

Privacy controls include an opt-out setting preventing users’ public content from being shared for AI training purposes. Automattic discourages AI crawlers from accessing WordPress.com content by default, except for its partners. When users engage AI features, relevant data gets sent to third-party providers, though ownership of AI-generated content remains complex and governed by each provider’s terms of service.

The integration positions WordPress.com competitively against AI-driven site builders while raising questions about the platform’s future direction. The exclusion of the vast self-hosted WordPress community—which powers roughly 43% of all websites—suggests potential expansion opportunities. As AI capabilities deepen, users must navigate evolving policies from both Automattic and its AI partners regarding data usage and content rights.
